Michelangelo never thought of himself as a great painter, yet he was. When commissioned with the Sistine chapel he painted not less than 9 central paintings and over 343 different figures on more than 520 square meters. About 115 of the figures are larger-than-life. Michelangelo painted standing in his feet and worked on each part in an amazingly short time proving true craftsmanship. After all, speed was crucial to this very operation: Working directly on the ceiling he had to move fast in order for the colors used to last. Only a true master could succeed with such a challenge.
See below for detailed imagery, descriptions and background information on main paintings by Michelangelo.
