Michelangelo Paintings

Actually, it might seem like an irony that Michelangelo Buonarroti is most famous for his paintings today. Michelangelo saw himself rather as a sculptor rather than painter, yet the frescos of the Sistine Chapel are without doubt his masterpiece.

Even more, when Pope Julius comissioned the ceiling for the Sistince Chapel, Michelangelo accepted only reluctant - a pope wasn't easy to refuse after all. The artist himself suspected the comission to be a conspiration against him, in order to keep him away from creating his outstanding sculptures and statues.

Maybe Michelangelo wasn't even aware after finishing, that he created a set of paintings, worth to be named the legacy of Renaissance art, and truly able to compete with his eternal "opponent", the likewise immortal Leonardo da Vinci.
